Where were you born and where are you from?
I was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, but grew up mostly in
California and Virginia.
How did you get introduced to the tattoo culture?
I've had a fascination with the tattoo culture since I was a
kid, I used to buy old biker mags in the 70's just to see the ink and of course
read the articles.
When did you get started?
I started experimenting in the late 70's and early 80's, but
didn't choose it for a career till the early 90's, when I moved to Hawaii to be
trained professionally.
Do you remember the first tattoo that you did?
Yes it was an ANKH I put on myself, I had to promote my work
somehow.
How would you describe your style of tattooing?
My styles are anything that's challenging, I like to tattoo
Photo Realism, Animals, Portraits, Bio Mechanical and Organic freehand art.
What were you doing before you got into the tattoo business,
and what made you change?
Back in the day before professional tattooing came about for
me, I was a certified welder/Machinist and ran a Roofing company. I still
tattooed on the side but didn't decide to make it a full time career till I
headed to Maui, Hawaii in 1991 to work for Skin Deep Tattoo.
What influences your artwork?
I'm influenced by the desire to push the boundaries of art
and tattooing, I'll never settle for second best.
What would you say is the best part about tattooing?
The best part of tattooing for me would have to be
conventions and being around all the best talent this industry has to offer. As
an artist and being around that energy helps me achieve new levels I never thought
possible. Also pounding a few Heinekens and eating Sushi while talking shop
with fellow artists.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get their
first tattoo?
Most of the tattoos I do are the type that you can keep
building on to, so I recommend to always try to see the future of your project and
plan well, there is nothing worst than regret.
Do you see yourself doing anything other than tattooing?
Tattooing is one of many mediums I work in, I also work in
Oil painting, Airbrush, Charcoal and Graphite, 3D CGI and Digital painting. I'm
eager to be a part of the Art Gallery scene in the near future.
Do you have a favorite quote?
“Life’s most fulfilling time is when you get your second
wind.”
What’s your biggest inspiration, what keeps you going?
I have to say my Family helps me push harder every day to
achieve new levels in art, they are my best critics.
What is one thing that life has taught you?
Be humble and try to keep your personal Drama to yourself.
Where do you see the tattoo culture 10 years from now?
10 years from now I see tattooing as well respected form of
art amongst all cultures. Also, new and improved colors that won't ever fade
with time.
